How does it work:
In the process of filtering water through a cation exchanger, the hardness ions Ca2 + and Mg2 + are replaced by Na + ions.

Replacement of calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ion guarantees the absence of scale formation on the heating surfaces of boilers and heat exchangers. As water passes through the cation exchanger layer, the amount of exchangeable sodium ions decreases, and the amount of calcium and magnesium ions retained on the resin increases, that is, the cation exchanger is "depleted". Then it should be regenerated - a sodium chloride solution is passed through the cation resin layer, as a result of which the exchange capacity of the cation resin is restored.

During regeneration, calcium and magnesium ions are washed off into the drainage, and the cation exchanger is saturated with sodium ions from the saline solution.
