Colloidal iron - the smallest particles of iron in water. So small that they do not precipitate. Colloidal particles cannot be removed with traditional mechanical cleaning filters and can only partially be removed by sorption filters.
Dissolved iron - water with an excess of dissolved iron looks clean, but after some time it turns yellow, and then brown precipitate appears in it: iron is oxidized in air. Dissolved iron leaves brown leaks on plumbing, although the water itself may not seem rusty.
